This sculpture is made from solid poplar and painted white to preserve its sharp angular definitions.

Tracing Trajectories

This handcrafted sculptural piece, measuring approximately 4" x 4", explores an unconventional approach to mirroring by capturing the movement of reflection rather than the object itself. Instead of duplicating a form or pattern symmetrically, the path traveled in the act of mirroring is what becomes the defining structure. This approach results in a composition that appears both organic and machined, blending precision with an almost fluid sense of motion. The interplay of symmetry and deviation creates a sense of complexity, as if the piece is in a state of transformation.

Made from solid poplar, the material was carefully selected for its fine grain and ease of shaping, allowing for clean edges and refined details. Poplar’s smooth texture ensures minimal visual distractions, making it an ideal choice for painted finishes, as it masks the natural wood grain for a sleek, uniform appearance. The absence of pronounced grain allows the form itself to take center stage, emphasizing the intricate details and crisp lines.

Through its materiality and conceptual foundation, this piece exists at the intersection of craft and digital precision, inviting viewers to reconsider how symmetry, movement, and negative space interact in physical form

Process to Product

3D model was created to better understand the connectivity of the complex shapes of the sculpture.

The process began with 3D modeling, where we first designed the form digitally to explore its geometric relationships and overall composition. After refining the design, we converted the digital model into buildable components.

Next, we refined the piece by patching any imperfections from the cutting process. Once smoothed, we moved on to painting and meticulously hand-assembling the components to bring the composition together.
